“Every form of excess is based on some pleasure that man wishes to repeat beyond the normal laws laid down by Nature. The less human strength is occupied, the more it tends to excess. It follows that the more civilized and peaceful a society is, the more its members will embark on the path to excess. For man the social animal, living means expending one’s energy pretty swiftly.”
